Over the next month we will be highlighting our favorites from our Best of 2019 feature in the December issue. Starting things off is the Al Mar Ultralight Titanium Series: Announced this past January, the acquisition of Al Mar Knives (AMK) by Edge Technologies Engineering (ETE) of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, breathed new life into the fabled Al Mar Knives brand, along with several updates to the firm’s well regarded but relatively static line. The company’s heritage is clearly evident in this year’s new Ultralight Titanium Series, which takes Al Mar’s traditional slim and sexy folder designs and updates them with a flipper mechanism and titanium scales with integral framelocks (a previous Ultralight series consisted of front-locks with thumb studs and micarta scales). These are available in 2.75”, 3.15”, and 4” closed lengths, corresponding to Al Mar’s original Hawk, Falcon and Eagle models (MSRP: $170-235). If you’re looking for something slightly more budget-friendly, take a look at the Ultralight FRN Series with Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon handles and linerlock mechanisms; the same models boast MSRPs of just $55-65. We’re very interested to see what the future holds for AMK.
